Dr James is a Consultant Neuropsychologist who completed his postgraduate training in Clinical Neuropsychology in his home country of Australia (Macquarie University under Prof Max Coltheart and Prof Arthur Shores). After working in acute brain injury rehabilitation hospitals in Sydney for several years, he relocated to the UK in 2001 where he was clinical lead for post-acute neurobehavioural rehabilitation services within the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust for 15 years. This involved working within secure hospital wards and community reintegration residential centres in the independent (charity) sector. He was appointed Consultant Neuropsychologist in 2006.

After completing his PhD in Neuropsychology (investigating neurobehavioural disorders after brain injury) at the University of York under Prof Andy Young, Dr James was appointed Consultant Neuropsychologist and Clinical Research Lead at the Leeds NHS Community Neurological Rehabilitation Team in 2015. He commenced medicolegal work in 2005 and has been in full-time private practice since 2019, specialising in complex acquired brain injury within Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence litigation. He continues in a Research Associate position at Goldsmiths (University of London) and his research interests include: improving ecological validity in the assessment of executive function, as well as ongoing work in self-regulation and insight following brain injury. Dr James is registered with the HCPC as a Clinical Psychologist and included in the BPS Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists.
