Simon Britten BM LLM MFFLM FRSA FRCS(Eng) FRCS(Tr&Orth)
Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Leeds Teaching Hospitals since 2002, having completed surgical training in Bath and Bristol and following fellowship training in the Ilizarov method at the Ilizarov Scientific Centre in Kurgan, Russia. Mr Britten’s clinical practice includes the treatment of severe lower limb fractures and post-traumatic limb reconstruction including non-union, mal-union and deformity, limb length inequality, bone loss and amputation. Mr Britten is the Immediate Past President of the British Limb Reconstruction Society, a sub-specialty society of the British Orthopaedic Association, whose primary purpose is the advancement of limb reconstruction services and techniques in the NHS and United Kingdom through surgical training, education, research and audit.
He has recently finished his three year tenure as Chair of the Medicolegal Committee of the British Orthopaedic Association – a national role committed to training and mentoring BOA members, both consultants and trainees, in medicolegal aspects of orthopaedic practice. In 2024, he was first author and editor of the BOA’s professional practice document ‘Practical guidance for orthopaedic surgeons preparing expert medicolegal reports’. In 2018, Mr Britten was awarded the taught degree of Master of Laws with Distinction in medical law and ethics by De Montfort University Leicester. Over the last 24 years, Mr Britten has performed around 1,000 Ilizarov frames for all traumatic and limb reconstruction indications, and he also has wide experience in the use of locked intramedullary nails, locking plating, amputation, and stump revision in collaboration with his plastic surgery colleagues. Mr Britten is currently working with Elsevier publishers to update and edit the 5th edition of Foy and Fagg’s Medicolegal Reporting in Orthopaedic Trauma, the well established go-to reference work in UK personal injury reporting, due for publication during 2026.
