Prof. Jai Kulkarni, MA, FRCP, FRCS
NHS Appointment: From April 1991 to end March 2020, Professor in Rehabilitation Medicine.

Prof. Kulkarni is accredited as a Rehabilitation Medicine Physician. His clinical work for the last 3 decades has been focused on the rehabilitation of people with amputations and limb loss, and some major limb trauma pre-amputation cases.

His medico-legal practice involves assessment of disability, determination of multidisciplinary therapy and prosthetic requirements and overview of the rehabilitation programme. This includes assessment of care needs, advice on employment potential and addressing some issues pertaining to life expectancy.

He is recognised at a National and International level in the field of Amputee Rehabilitation. Having completed his Masters in Health Care Law & Medical Ethics from the University of Manchester, he is keen on ethical issues in rehabilitation. In September 2024, he received the Lifetime Membership Achievement award via the British Society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine.

Prof. Kulkarni has significant experience in the management of rehabilitation and other health services. Until March 2020, he was Clinical Director of a large sub-regional Amputee/Prosthetic Rehabilitation Centre in Manchester for over 12 years. He is also a past Clinician Lead of the sub-regional neuro-rehabilitation unit and Chair of STSC, and served as Regional Training Programme Director for Rehabilitation Medicine at North West Deanery.

He is an Hon. Professor in Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Salford and has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals, the majority on amputee rehabilitation.

He has co-authored a book on prescribing upper limb prostheses and written chapters on post-amputation pain in textbooks. He has supervised 4 MSc student projects and collaborated in numerous university projects.

Prof. Kulkarni has over 25 years of experience in Medico-Legal work and practice and has produced over 650 reports over this period. His practice now mainly concentrates on people with limb amputations and loss and related rehabilitation needs.

In the last 4 years, around 80% of his work has been Claimant orientated, around 15% Defendant orientated, and 5% as Single Joint Expert reports. He has given expert witness evidence at Court within the last 5 years.
