Dr Glyn Towlerton trained in medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, before completing postgraduate training at the Royal Brompton and Hammersmith Hospitals and gaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians. He went on to specialise in anaesthetics and pain medicine, gaining Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and undertook further fellowship training in Sydney, Australia and Seattle, USA before taking up his substantive NHS consultant post at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in 2000. He holds Fellowship of Interventional Pain Practice, awarded following the World Institute of Pain’s interventional examinations, and FFPMRCA.
At Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Dr Glyn Towlerton led the Clinical Pain Management team managing acute post-operative and chronic pain conditions, and continues to lead the hospital’s spinal cord stimulator team. He sits on the integrated spinal multidisciplinary team at Imperial Health Care Trust and holds the post of Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London. His clinical interests centre on the assessment and treatment of spinal conditions, interventional and regional anaesthesia, and chronic pain of the neck, shoulder and low back, including complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and persistent post-operative surgical pain.
Dr Glyn Towlerton has prepared expert evidence for the UK courts for over a decade, covering medical negligence, whiplash, cauda equina syndrome, CRPS, persistent surgical pain, and nerve injury following anaesthesia and nerve blocks. He is instructed on behalf of both claimants and defendants, including joint instructions, and has attended court. His claimant/defendant ratio is approximately 70:30.
He has completed report-writing and civil expert training including the Cardiff University Bond Salon Civil Expert course and Bond Salon/APIL annual update courses, and chairs the British Pain Society’s Medicolegal Special Interest Group. He has lectured to law firms and medicolegal conferences on the medicolegal aspects of pain and spinal injury, and consults from Fortius Clinic, London.
